Places to Stay

Many of the hotels I have listed are between $90 and $130 a night and all include breakfast. A few are more expensive but still less than others in the same town. Some towns happen to be more expensive for example Venice, Cinque Terre, Santa Marguerita Ligure, Capri, Positano, Taormina. We like to have a sea view which is usually more expensive. All of the hotels I listed for the above towns are still cheaper than most, include breakfast and have sea views if you wish. Many of the hotels reduce the prices after Memorial Day.

The hotels I have listed are ideal for day trips. I have given an outline of places to visit from certain towns you may like to stay in. Please see section on day trips.

Hotels charge a city tax (VAT) per room per day which is not in your quote. It is added on at the end of your stay and is usually a few Euros (3 to 5?).

    Milan

Hotel Star downtown
This hotel is on a small one way street in downtown Milan. You won’t get a cheaper, nicer and best location hotel. If you are dropping a car off in town get your luggage out quickly and have the other couple check in. If alone or as a couple you can drop the car off first and take a cab to the hotel. I have stayed here for $110/night with breakfast. Easy walk to the Last Supper, Duomo, shopping, and Trattoria Milanese for veal and rissoto milanese.

    Venice

Hotel Olympia at Piazzale Roma
Take a bus from airport to Piazza Roma (8 euros or so) and you can wheel . your suitcse to the hotel from the bus stop. There are 3 sets of stairs, 1 up and 2 down to get to Hotel (not difficult). The hotel is in a nice location . You do not need a car in Venice. Rent one on the way out, right up the block from the hotel.  Sit outside on the small canal and have a drink.

    La Morra

Roche Costamagna Art Suites
Alexandro, the owner is fantastic! So is his Barolo and Arneis wines. His Arneis is the only white wine I drink. Serve extra cold with any fish! Only 4 rooms that overlook the spectacular Langhe valley. Price $125/night with breakfast. He will get you to any of the nearby towns and is a wealth of information. The only place to stay in La Morra and we love his wine! No elevator, easy one flight of stairs. | Email Alexandro

    Montalcino

Hotel dei Capitani
Massimo, my friend works there! Ask for a room with view of the breath taking Val d’Orca. Oh my, what a view! If the room isn’t ready, just leave the bags in lobby and walk to clock tower in center of town. Eat lunch with a bottle of Brunello or Rosso de Montalcino wine. From here drive a few minutes to my friends at La Fortuna and La Fornance for a wine tasting and wine shipping. Have lunch at Pozzo, see the Sant Antimo abbey, buy honey at Villa Cipressa. Dinner at San Georgio. | Email Massimo
